AGENTIC CODING BENCHMARK '26.
The code moves ahead. Trust falls behind.
Three engineers were given the same assignment, twenty hours of human development time and a maximum token budget of one thousand euros. Under their direction, AI agents independently built the same application. The results reveal where the real bottleneck is shifting.
THREE INSIGHTS FROM THE EXPERIMENT

AI builds faster than humans can responsibly review.
The three agentic codebases quickly grew to approximately 7,100, 17,000 and 36,000 lines of code. Producing code was no longer the limiting factor. Understanding, reviewing and accepting it was.

The quality of the brief becomes the quality of the software.
Agents do not automatically resolve conflicting tickets, implicit decisions or outdated context. Instead, they can consistently turn that ambiguity into software.

A green test does not always mean good software.
During the experiment, tests sometimes passed while the application still failed to perform properly in manual use. Automated checks provide evidence, but human judgement remains essential.
