WHY THE POWER GRID IS THE BACKBONE OF OUR SOCIETY
- Integration of renewable energy: The power grid must be able to efficiently handle and distribute the growing production of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power.
- Strengthening energy security: A robust grid reduces dependence on fossil fuels and external energy sources, contributing to national energy security. Starting in 2025, Dutch grid operators will invest approximately €8 billion annually in energy infrastructure, a significant increase from the past. According to the European Court of Auditors, between €1,994 and €2,294 billion will be needed until 2050 to meet electricity grid needs.
- Supporting economic growth: A reliable and future-proof grid is essential for the electrification of industry, mobility, and households, creating economic opportunities. But there is a growing shortage of skilled workers to carry out the necessary grid expansions and upgrades.

Building with vision. Choosing with courage
“We had to make speed and do it right,” says Karsten Veldhuizen, Product Owner at Enexis. “Because our organization has to build transport capacity while personnel is scarce, the complexity of the network is increasing, and new technologies are emerging at a rapid pace.”
To meet these challenges, Enexis saw the need for a central, secure and scalable Generative AI (GenAI) infrastructure. A platform on which diverse applications could land. Everyone saw the opportunities of AI but there were also questions about how it could concretely help the organization.
The question that determined everything: build or buy? “We made that consideration over and over again,” says Karsten. “And if we’re going to build, what techniques do we use to make it ourselves? Because not everything that comes on the market is always finished, or safe.” That took guts. But also vision, governance, technical depth and a partner that not only brings and implements knowledge but also thinks along critically. And that’s where Team Rockstars IT came in.
Certainly navigating an uncertain AI Landscape
What do you do when you have to make choices about technology that is still in development? You bring someone on board who not only knows what works, but also what adds lasting value. The fact that you don’t have to discover it all yourself saves a lot of time.
Team Rockstars IT provided an experienced Cloud Architect to the GenAI Acceleration Team. Their joint mission: design and implement a platform that makes large language models (LLMs) available to various GenAI solutions within the organization through a single standardized AI Gateway. Think applications such as an internal ChatGPT, failure analysis and social prioritization. “The menu of use cases is very extensive with GenAI, you have to standardize that to have one point of entry,” Karsten says. “This is where the Rockstar has made the difference. This is really the key to making the platform scalable and secure.”
SMART AI CALLS FOR TIGHT STRINGS
Security was the starting point, not an afterthought. “Our data stays in-house,” states Karsten. Therefore, the platform was built entirely in-house, with robust safeguards: API access control, standardized model interactions, PII masking and anti-squatting scanning. On top of that, Rockstar implemented crystal clear governance, with clear roles, ethical checks and sustainability monitoring. Smart and secure, from day one.
CLOUD AGNOSTIC: SCALABLE AND FLEXIBLE
During the project, the Rockstar supports the GenAI Acceleration Team in decision-making that is critical to the success of the implementation. Such as the selection and integration of market solutions (such as OpenAI and Azure AI) and self-hosted models. Choosing a cloud agnostic approach allows Enexis to support a wide range of models, which has a direct impact on the flexibility and scalability of the platform.
“On all facets, your Rockstar thinks critically and shares his vision. From platform selection to solutions running, a secure Enexis chat, sufficient capacity of tokens to distribute throughout the organization, network integration, and so on. Then you just see: he enjoys thinking along,” Karsten says enthusiastically.
READY FOR THE FUTURE: ONE MULTI-PURPOSE PLATFORM WITH FAST, SECURE RELEASES
The strength of the GenAI platform lies in its multi-deployability. “That was an important requirement for us,” Karsten said. The platform acts as a central hub for various AI applications. Not only was delivery faster than expected, within six months instead of nine, so were the applications. And that’s having an impact! For example, customer service saves about 15 minutes per email thanks to smartly generated answers to frequently asked questions. Tens of thousands of questions are answered this way every year. Do the math. But there is more.
- Acceleration: fast and good. Three months shorter lead time in the delivery of for the GenAI platform, for over 2000 users: future-proof, secure and scalable, AI governance and tech guardrails are secured.
- Productivity: The internal ChatGPT was adopted by 1,400 employees within one week, with an estimated productivity gain of 15%.
- Time savings: Automation of orders saves engineers a lot of time and implementers are less busy with administrative tasks. As a result, more time is spent realizing a future-proof grid.
- Quality: Better insight into tenders and forecasts on grid loads.

It turned out to be a formula for success: The Rockstar’s external expertise “he is super knowledgeable in all areas,” combined with internal eagerness to learn. “Because your Rockstar can also work well together,” Karsten explains “a powerful and dynamic duo emerged with our lead developer, who lacks his experience but is a fast learner!”
Conversely, the Rockstar calls his collaboration in the Enexis GenAI Acceleration Project “multifaceted, challenging and incredibly rewarding.” It gives him the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies while contributing to the digital transformation of a leading player in the energy industry.
What began as collaboration grew into an accelerator of vision and innovation.
