Rockstar Interview

Building tools that make the internal employee’s life easier. That was the assignment IT Rockstar Mick received from Bol.com. Instead of endless Excel sheets and different applications, we are working with a team toward a single environment where all operations on bol.com’s assortment can be performed in a user-friendly and clear manner. The necessary software development is secret and we are not allowed to publish it.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PROJECT?

The company bol.com really appealed to me, I really like the flat structure and the freedom and autonomy of the teams.

What techniques tooling did you use?

For the backend we chose Java, the frontend is built with the latest version of Angular. At the time of writing, this is Angular 5. Furthermore, on the frontend for managing the application state, we used RxJS.

WHAT DID THE PROJECT DELIVER TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE/USER?

A single platform where they can perform various operations in a user-friendly way.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN THE PROJECT?

I learned a lot about improving code efficiency. How do I recognize and improve code bottlenecks? I also learned a lot from my more experienced colleagues about standards and best-practices within Java and Angular.

WHAT MADE TEAM ROCKSTARS IT-WORTHY?

The cool organization (bol.com) that gives its development teams a lot of autonomy to make their own choices within the development process. What language? What frameworks? There is a lot of room to experiment and this is encouraged.
