Besi wants to be a market leader in the backend industry of high-end solutions. This is a market that is changing tremendously, with the developments around chips in smartphones and tablets of course being the most prominent.

In this we are subject to a changing market, but also to customer demand (everything must be smaller and faster) which is changing. A short time to market is key, with price always under pressure. Our business model is based on development-on-order.

We are constantly learning and continuing to improve our processes. We teach our systems to work autonomously and make sure everything stays in sync globally.

COMPOSITIONAL LAYOUTS

There are currently 26 developers within my department. I structurally hire 40% to cope with market fluctuations and changing market demands. In recent years, this has worked out to about 9 to 14 employees on a temporary basis. As a listed company, you always need room to absorb disappointing results and to be able to add power to build new features or tap into segments (relatively) quickly. For the latter, we make use of some experienced IT Rockstars, in order to keep the time to market low and the existing business going.

In practice, this also provides scope for developing new systems and renewing the architecture of existing applications. As a result, changes within the complex software no longer have an impact on other systems, work can be done according to future standards, and new people do not have to be trained in a domain for as long. This gives us many advantages for the future, so you quickly have people up and running to build new features.

What I find strong about Team Rockstars IT’s model is that they already know people from their college days. As a result, they quickly have talent in their sights and know very clearly who they are matching to one of our applications! We have used this a lot over the past few years, where lately we also like to use their pool of experienced workers who can be quickly brought on board.

Because the experienced developers have already gained knowledge and experience in various environments, this immediately adds value to the team and best practices are shared. This can be about a specific tooling or technique, but can also be about a choice of working methodology such as Kanban vs. Scrum. We at Besi like to learn from others, as you can’t have all the wisdom in a rapidly changing IT market.

We notice with the new generation of developers that they are motivated differently than regular employees who have been working here for a long time. This brings challenges. It always starts with taking a good look at whether people fit with us as a company. That’s why I always show our high-end solutions/machines during an application process. Then you see in someone’s eyes what it does to them.

Furthermore, for people who like autonomy and working within a multidisciplinary team, Besi offers a great opportunity to open up to work that they would not normally come into direct contact with, such as turning something together themselves with a screwdriver to maintaining customer contact. In this, we really have an approach mentality and give people (permanent and hired employees) a lot of opportunity for development. The changing market and customer demands mean that we have to be open-minded and lean in this respect.

Our teams also create real added value in practice; we literally make machines smart and put them in motion. Finally, we go along with wishes around flexible working and it is sometimes necessary to test self-built features at our production facility in Malaysia and/or at our customers.
