BRINGING LEGACY AND INNOVATION TOGETHER IN A NEW ARCHITECTURE

VolkerWessels Telecom’s (legacy) application landscape (VWT) has evolved over the years. Knowledge about this is mostly “in people’s heads,” and applications no longer always match the changing demands of the business. Within VWT, another team was working on new technology and innovation.

Leon van der Heijden, director of digitalization & ICT at VolkerWessels Telecom, took on the challenge of bringing these two worlds together. “Standardize to make flexible” is his statement in this regard.

First, a blueprint of the desired future architecture is needed in order to then (re)build future-proof applications, in the cloud.

Solution

FROM SPAGHETTI TO ARCHITECTURE

Leon enlisted IT Rockstar Hans Hart to take apart and rearrange “the spaghetti. The goal of the new architecture blueprint is to eventually move into a full SaaS environment. With the blueprint, VWT can start taking the necessary steps to become truly data-driven.

Leon: “Capturing data to unlock is important to leave the knowledge behind for the new generation. Data gives us more insight into the operation, bottlenecks and also what is going just right.” This ensures that problems are solved faster and helps it serve customers better.

Team Rockstars IT, by using the principles of RockSOLID software, has laid a good foundation for the future of VolkerWessels Telecom. 100 applications have now been reduced to 7 basic applications. “Hans knows how to make a good choice between the possible solutions and stands behind them 100%.”
